The Ultimate Surgery Preparation Guide: Orthopedic Surgeon's Perspective

As orthopedic surgeons, we have witnessed countless patients undergo outpatient surgeries, and one thing remains consistent: proper preparation significantly contributes to a smoother surgical experience and enhanced recovery. With that in mind, we have compiled a surgery preparation guide to ensure you are fully equipped for any upcoming procedures.

1. Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power. Take the time to understand the specifics of your surgery, including its purpose, potential risks, and expected outcomes. Discuss any concerns or questions with your surgeon at your pre-op to alleviate anxieties and establish realistic expectations.

2. Follow Preoperative Instructions: Your surgeon will provide detailed preoperative instructions which may include fasting requirements, medication adjustments, or pre-procedure hygiene protocols.

3. Arrange Transportation and Support: Outpatient surgeries typically involve anesthesia, and it is essential that you arrange transportation to and from the surgery center.  It is also very valuable to enlist friends or family as a support system to assist with postoperative care and household tasks during your recovery period.

4. Prepare Your Home: Create a comfortable and safe environment for your return home post-surgery by arranging necessary supplies, such as medications, ice packs, and assistive devices, within easy reach. It will be vital to clear pathways, acquire a knee scooter or rails for your shower and consider temporary accommodation on the ground floor if stairs pose a challenge.

5. Plan for Recovery: Allocate adequate time for your recovery and inform your employer or school about your absence. Delegate responsibilities at home as needed and be sure to prioritize self-care activities, such as rest, hydration, and nutritious meals, to facilitate healing.

6. Dress Appropriately: Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of surgery, preferably garments that are easy to remove and will not interfere with surgical site access. Refrain from wearing jewelry, makeup, or contact lenses, as these may need to be removed before the procedure.

7. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Managing pre (and post) operative anxiety is crucial for a smooth surgical experience. Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or meditation, to calm your nerves and promote a positive mindset.

8. Communicate Any Changes: If any changes occur in your health status leading up to the surgery, such as new symptoms or medication adjustments, promptly inform your surgical team. Clear communication ensures they can adapt your care plan accordingly and minimize potential risks.

We hope these tips will help you approach your outpatient surgery with confidence and peace of mind. Preparation is vital to a successful outcome, and your commitment to proactive planning will undoubtedly contribute to a smoother recovery.
